Principle Objective: Support the Tom Ford Brand to continue to be the global leader in ultraluxe beauty and fashion by ensuring brand packaging innovation is developed to support the values of unrivaled quality, creativity and technical readiness. Lead the development of a fragrance packaging innovation pipeline alongside technical packaging cross brand teams and leveraging the knowledge of a strong supplier based in the area of fragrance, makeup, bath & body and home products. Support designated business segment by being the innovation steward for the brand and ensuring proper innovation pacing. Lead and develop package engineering staff by ensuring all new package development projects meet or exceed the quality, creative and product delivery requirements within a managed timeline and cost objectives.
Responsibilities:
Package Innovation Steward
• Understand that the first consumer experience is the package. Represent the culture and DNA of the brand or business segment being managed.
• Work with the brand leads to develop upstream innovation strategy leveraging supplier network, professional expertise and internal corporate groups (technical category packaging team)
• Liaison between Marketing/Creative Brand leads and the packaging technical community while leading, managing and developing a staff of new package development engineers.
Brand Management
• Define and create goals and objectives for direct brand reports that are in line with corporate and departmental strategy.
• Ensure staff is provided the necessary direction, support, and tools to succeed in the assigned task or project.
• Collaborate with cross brand category team and the rest of the technical community to secure technical readiness in every development project.
• Utilize Talent Management™ to create developmental plans for direct reports in order to increase their value, experience and growth opportunities.
• Ensure all future recruitment meets job profiles and adequately plans for promotion opportunities and smooth succession.
• Manage staff workload in accordance with project and category demands.
• Provide comprehensive feasibility of each concept or package that defines function, manufacturability, component cost, tooling estimates, preliminary development lead time, risk and global consistency.
• Ensure all brand or category packaging complies with global regulatory and environmental requirements.
• Champion the corporate efforts to support social and environmental responsibility (i.e. PPWR)
Strategic Initiatives
• Collaborate with R&D, creative and brand packaging to develop concepts and drive packaging newness for the Tom Ford brand.
• Partner with Brand Design to focus on short term and long-term packaging strategy that aligns with corporate initiatives.
• Pursue the highest possible innovation through collaboration with Research and Development and Category Innovations team.
• Support the Strategic Management Initiative by continuously monitoring Package Development task requirements versus project timing and quality commitments.
Project Management
• Support the Strategic Management Initiative by managing all aspects of the development process.
• Package Feasibility.
• Packaging outline development.
• Component/ Package costing specifications and technical profiles.
• Supplier recommendation /selection.
• Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (Pre-Design Turnover and Post Business Award).
• Suggest tooling strategy to support both preliminary forecast and weekly rate of production requirements.
• Build value analysis into every new development ensuring the construction and design provides the most cost effective way to achieve design criteria but also provide the best function and quality.
• Manage projects through Technical Packaging to ensure design and construction meets all Tom Ford and Estee Lauder companies corporate engineering requirements.
• Develop and implement package test plans for all projects.
• Work with Manufacturing and Quality Engineering to define specifications, design criteria and defect ranges to ensure optimal process flow from manufacture of components through filling and assembly.
• Develop package specifications and validate that technical drawings clearly identify all aspects required to define the package.
• Ensure all projects are completed and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, and manufacturability objectives.
• Ensure component production and filling/assembly are operating efficiently at optimal rate of production.
• Ensure that packages/components meet the needs of the Brand, corporation, Regulatory and Environmental Legislation, and consumer safety.
• Keep informed through colleagues, vendors, journals, professional affiliations, and seminars of new materials, processes, and procedures.
• Develop detailed component timelines including all package development tasks and manage them.
• Support Global Brand Value Chain (BVC) and Global Supplier Relations (GSM) with package development schedules and identify risks or ways to mitigate risks to support a component availability requirement.
• Identify and inform BVC and GSM of any risks and or delays during the course of development.
• Establish workload priorities to ensure all projects are managed within expected due dates.
Direct and Indirect Management
• Manage in-direct reports and colleagues ensuring they are provided the necessary support and tools to succeed on the assigned task or project while driving to ensure tasks are completed.
• Communicate and work closely with all development groups including R & D leads, BVC, Marketing, Product Development and Creative Design.
• Build and cultivate relationships with Global Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering.
Qualifications
Education / Certification
• Minimum BS degree in Packaging Science or Engineering.
• Masters in business, business management or a related field.
• IOPP certification preferred.
Direct Experience
• 15 + years experience in package development.
• Concentrated experience in prestige beauty industry with proven development experience in color, fragrance and skin care categories preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of global supplier community and understanding of pricing structures.
• Demonstrated understanding of manufacturing and distribution process as it relates to supporting targeted and global product launch strategies.
Management Experience
• Proven experience managing senior level reports.
• Clear leadership ability.
Technical Competency
• Technical competency in analysis of geometric objects in 2 and 3 dimensions including understanding of clearances, fit and finish of packaging components and subcomponents.
• Comprehensive knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
• Comprehensive knowledge of decorating techniques and materials used on primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
• Comprehensive knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
• Strong network and understanding of packaging suppliers in the fragrance space. Specially around Paris.
Pay Range:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $155,000.00 to $255,000.00. Exact salary depends on several factors such as experience, skills, education, and budget. Salary range may vary based on geographic location.
